Implementing interdisciplinary integration: A case study of the Information Technologies and Communication course in the Digital Linguistics master’s program

The development of Industry 4.0 and shifting labor market demands necessitate a strategic shift toward interdisciplinarity in university education, particularly at the master’s level. This imperative is reflected in key regulatory frameworks and is strongly endorsed by scholars in the humanities and social sciences. This article explores the implementation of interdisciplinary integration within the Digital Linguistics master’s program at Herzen University. Using the core discipline Information Technologies and Communication as a case study, the analysis examines integration across multiple levels. The framework distinguishes between vertical integration, which involves the progressive complexity of material from foundational theory to advanced application, and horizontal integration. Horizontal integration is analyzed across four dimensions: connections with related linguistic disciplines, non-adjacent subject areas, the development of soft skills, and the use of digital language tools. Conceptually, the course serves as a foundational module, fostering information literacy and familiarizing students with core technologies for interlingual communication. To illustrate horizontal integration, the article presents specific educational cases, both theoretical and applied. These cases are designed to cultivate critical and creative thinking in data analysis and the use of neural networks, underscoring the importance of deep domain knowledge for information verification.
