The formation of ideas about the boundaries between norm and pathology of mental development: Historical and philosophical aspects through the lens of the present day

The article presents historical and genetic analysis of the formation of ideas about norm, pathology and diagnostic criteria of mental illness in the works of philosophers and scientists of the past. The article shows the changes in views on the problem of normative development and human disability in different historical epochs, both in Russia and abroad. It is shown how the ideas about the ‘norm’ in the works of philosophers influenced the formation of theoretical fondations of pedagogical models of education of children with sensory and intellectual disorders up to the end of the 18th century. The authors argue that it is especially important to refer to the origins of the ideas about the norm and pathology of mental development in order to expand the professional outlook of teachers, encourage creative and critical thinking of defectology and correctional pedagogy students, and understand the modern problems of diagnostics of different types of dysontogenesis and variants of individual development of persons with physical and mental disorders.
