This article examines theoretical approaches to understanding the concepts of ‘selfpresentation’ and ‘attitude toward appearance’. The study aimed to identify the distinctive features of self-presentation among students with varying attitudes toward their appearance. The research hypothesis was that male and female students exhibit gender-specific differences in their attitudes toward appearance and in their self-presentation tactics. The sample comprised 50 university students (male and female) aged 18 to 27 years. The study employed the following methods: the Self-Presentation Tactics Scale by S. Lee, B. Quigley, M. Nesler, A. Corbett, and J. Tedeschi (adaptated by O. A. Pikuleva and V. V. Khoroshikh); the Appearance Questionnaire by L. V. Kulikov and N. P. Orlova; the ‘Who Am I?’ method by M. Kuhn and T. McPartland (adapted by T. V. Rumyantseva); an an original questionnaire designed to assess students’ satisfaction with their appearance and to examine the perceived role of appearance in various communicative situations. A comparative analysis was conducted between male and female participants. Gender differences in self-presentation tactics and attitudes toward appearance were observed. The results confirmed the hypothesis, indicating that male and female students differ both in their attitudes toward their appearance and in their selfpresentation tactics. They demonstrated different strategies and priorities in shaping their self-image, highlighting the significance of appearance in various communication contexts.
