Developing students’ motivation for social-moral and patriotic activity through physical education in a university sports club

This article presents the results obtained in 2025 within a study supported by an internal grant from Herzen University on the topic ‘Modern practice-oriented approaches to physical culture and sports activities within the university’s student sports club’ (project no. 63-VG). The study was conducted as part of Herzen University’s Development Program 2030 and in accordance with Order of the Vice-Rector for Research No. 0105-218/01 dated 28 December 2024 ‘On the results of internal grant competitions among teaching and research staff of Herzen University’. The authors, from the Department of Physical Education and Mass Sports of the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, examined the motor activity of Herzen University students during academic and extracurricular hours and assessed the development of students’ motivation for social-moral and patriotic activity through physical education in the student sports club. In the context of higher education reform, particularly important are such issues as strengthening students’ health, promoting a healthy lifestyle, motivating social-moral and patriotic engagement, and realizing individual potential through physical education and sports. These aspects are considered as relevant criteria for the social progress of society at the present stage.
