Abstract

This article examines small group cohesion, identifying four student groups based on their cohesion level and subsequently analyzing academic motives and group motivation across these groups. The predominant academic motives include professional, creative self-realization, educational and cognitive, and communicative ones. Analysis of variance reveals a difference in the communicative motive between Groups I and III. Group I demonstrates a significantly higher level of communicative motive than Group II. A difference also emerges in the cognitive motive, which is higher in Group I than in Group III. Low group cohesion is associated with low group motivation, whereas group motivation scores are highest among students with high and above-average cohesion levels. Academic motives were analyzed across groups depending on the level of cohesion. Analysis of variance reveals significant differences between the medium-cohesion and high-cohesion groups across two indicators: the communicative motive (p ≤ 0.001) and the cognitive motive (p ≤ 0.001). The remaining motives are expressed equally. The study confirmed that more cohesive student groups demonstrate higher group motivation.
